چکیده

font-independent character descriptions are important for a systematic approach to automated and semi-automated font design. This is particularly so for large character sets such as Kanji. The paper defines a completely coordinate-independent notation for Kanji, which contains all the necessary information to produce legible character sketches.

Tsukurimashou: a Japanese-language Font Meta-family

METAFONT-based font projects for the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) languages have been announced every few years since the early 1980s, even predating the current form of the METAFONT language. Except for a few non-parameterized conversions of fonts that originated in other formats, in 30 years every METAFONT CJK font has been abandoned at or before the 8-bit barrier of 256 kanji, nowhere...

Examining two extreme cases of kanji recognition by Japanese using magnetoencephalography

This paper reports two extreme cases of kanji recognition by Japanese participants using magnetoencephalography (MEG). MEG is a non-invasive technique to measure magnetic field activities generated by neural activities in the brain. MEG was used to investigate neural activities when participants saw visually presented kanji and other objects. In this study we will report two extreme cases; one,...

The Computational Semantics of Characters

The semantic properties associated with larger text units, typically morphemes, words, phrases, and sentences, have been treated computationally in innumerable studies. Smaller text units have largely been ignored to date in the context of computational semantics research. We argue in this paper that although the forms of smaller units at the orthographic level have received considerable attent...

An Investigation into Kanji Character Discrimination Process from EEG Signals

The frontal area in the brain is known to be involved in behavioral judgement. Because a Kanji character can be discriminated visually and linguistically from other characters, in Kanji character discrimination, we hypothesized that frontal event-related potential (ERP) waveforms reflect two discrimination processes in separate time periods: one based on visual analysis and the other based on l...

Modeling of Pen-Coordinate Information in SCPR-based HMM for On-line Recognition of Handwritten Japanese Characters

This paper describes stochastic modeling of pencoordinate information in HMMs with structured character pattern representation (SCPR) for on-line recognition of handwritten Japanese characters. SCPR allows HMMs for Kanji character patterns to share common subpatterns. Although SCPR-based HMMs have been successfully applied to Kanji character recognition, the pen-coordinate feature has not been ...
